Upcoming Projects

The Montana Department of Transportation does not currently maintain a specific long range plan for consultant utilization. As projects are nominated, internal staff analyzes the capability for MDT to complete the work internally, at which time the decision is made to design with internal MDT staff or to utilize a consultant firm.

The table below contains known projects/term contracts coming up that the MDT is planning to utilize external consultant services for at this time.

Gold Creek Rest Area Study to evaluate options for the Gold Creek Rest Area facility. The study will evaluate two alternatives: a reduced-services option (truck parking), and an abandonment option. The end result of the study will be a report that evaluates the need for continued reduced services at this location and summarizes the costs associated with those services. Additionally, the study will include an analysis of the costs associated with an abandonment option. 2017/2018
Cultural Resources Term Contracts Term contracts for conducting cultural and archeological resource inventories for specific projects. The purpose of the resource inventories is the identification and evaluation of known or suspected cultural or archeological resource sites within the project's area of potential effect. Fall 2017
27th Street RR Crossing - Billings Detailed study to determine short and long-term solutions for the existing at-grade railroad crossing on 27th Street in Billings. A high-level study was recently completed (2016 Montana Rail Grade Separation Study), identifying this location as being a high priority for MDT. Traffic analysis, structure expertise, Railroad coordination, and public engagement strategies will all be important qualifications for the selected firm to possess. At the completion of this study, the contract will likely end as MDT then considers the viability of proceeding forward with solutions. A different solicitation will be pursued for detailed design effort. The consultant selected for this study will not be precluded from further design services. Summer/Fall 2017
Mobridge Geotechnical Study Detailed study to determine factors contributing to slope failure on US 191 from RP 84.3 to 85.2, and to determine short and long-term mitigation solutions. This will be a two-phase project; the first phase will be a study; if a viable solution is discovered, the contract will be amended to add detailed design services as a second phase. Development time is important for this study since there is continual maintenance effort required at this location due to the perpetual movement of the slope and resultant impact to the roadway. Summer/Fall 2017
Jct 250 – North Comprehensive design services for the reconstruction of Primary Route 32 (MT 13) from reference post 16.6 to 25.0. Project will include a new bridge and revisions to both the horizontal and vertical alignments. Survey (control, engineering, and cadastral) has been completed. The cadastral survey was completed by DOWL under the Department's Survey Term Contract. This project is on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. Summer/Fall 2017
Reserve – East Proposed capital improvement project on Secondary Highway 258 from reference post 0.0 to 11.4. Initial project analysis will be performed using the Other (OT) phase in order to evaluate viability of project scope, complete pre-NEPA activities, evaluate capital improvement options, identify the preferred improvement option, and to develop an accurate construction estimate. The selected consultant for the OT phase will be retained for full design services, depending on the viability of improvement options (if no viable options are identified, the PE phase will not be pursued). Firms will be evaluated and selected based on their qualifications to complete both the OT and PE phases. Summer/Fall 2017
Conley St Bridge – Deer Lodge Comprehensive design services for the replacement of the Clark Fork Bridge on Conley Ave in Deer Lodge. Project will include replacement of the structure on the existing alignment with minimal road work. Powell County has recommended replacement of this structure and there is a TSEP grant associated with the project. The selected consultant must have the ability to work with 2D hydraulic modeling. Consideration for bull trout and consultation with USFWS is also required. Fall 2017
R/W Design Term Contracts Term Contracts for Right-of-Way (R/W) design services, including R/W plan development. Acquisition and Appraisal services are not an element of these term contracts. Summer/Fall 2017
Bridge Load Rating Term Contracts Term Contracts for NBIS load rating services on an as-needed basis for bridges statewide. It is expected that the work will be in calendar years 2018-2020, as MDT's current Bridge Load Rating Term Contracts expire in December 2017. Fall/Winter 2017
Dena Mora Rest Area Investigation and assessment of the existing Dena Mora Safety Rest Area wastewater system. The system is experiencing inflow and infiltration (I&I) in the storage tank and dose tank. The consultant will be required to perform this investigation and assessment, and provide a report detailing the exact locations where I&I is occurring and provide recommendations and estimates to repair or replace elements of the wastewater system, or reconstruction of the entire wastewater system to eliminate I&I. SF 169 West of Whitefish Comprehensive design services for project on US-93, west of Whitefish. The preliminary scope of the project is to widen the roadway to include 4-foot shoulders on both the inside and outside of the curves from RP 133 – 134. Additionally, it is proposed to extend the guardrail at RP 133.845 (on the inside of the curve) to the south. Summer/Fall 2017
SF 169 Conrad & 2nd - Kalispell Safety improvement project at the intersection of Woodland Ave (U-6726) and 2nd Street East (U-6715) in Kalispell. Initial project assessment and preliminary development will consist of an Other (OT) phase study to evaluate intersection improvement options at this intersection. A preliminary assessment suggests that a roundabout is the preferred alternative. The selected consultant will be retained for providing full comprehensive design services for the selected treatment, if a feasible treatment is determined. Summer/Fall 2017
SF 169 Batavia Intersection Impr. Safety improvement project at the intersection of Batavia Lane and US 2, west of Kalispell. Initial project assessment and preliminary development will consist of an Other (OT) phase study to evaluate intersection improvement options at this intersection. A preliminary assessment suggests that a roundabout is the preferred alternative. The selected consultant will be retained for providing full comprehensive design services for the selected treatment, if a feasible treatment is determined. Summer/Fall 2017
SF 169 Rimrock & 62nd Street West Safety improvement project at the intersection of Rimrock and 62nd Street West, west of Billings. Initial project assessment and preliminary development will consist of an Other (OT) phase study to evaluate intersection improvement options at this intersection. A preliminary assessment suggests that a roundabout is the preferred alternative. The selected consultant will be retained for providing full comprehensive design services for the selected treatment, if a feasible treatment is determined. Summer/Fall 2017
Conner – South Proposed capital improvement project located on US 93, south of Darby, starting at RP 16.24 and ending at RP 23.24. The project will include either a re-evaluation of the existing Environmental Assessment (EA) or a new environmental document. The EA is available here. The FONSI is also available here. The consultant will be required to provide comprehensive design services necessary for the project, including (but not limited to) roadway design, bridge design, geotechnical (retaining walls, rock cuts, blasting, bridge foundations), survey, environmental document, public involvement, evaluation of wildlife accommodation, hydraulics (large culverts), R/W design, and R/W acquisition. Whitefish Stage Road – Kalispell Proposed capital improvement project located on S-292. Preliminary project limits are from RP 0.5 to RP 9.3. Initial project assessment and preliminary development will consist of an Other (OT) phase study to evaluate the scope and length of the project. The selected consultant will be retained for providing full comprehensive design services, if a feasible treatment is determined. These services include (but are not limited to) roadway design, geotechnical investigation, analysis and design, survey, environmental document, public involvement, hydraulics, R/W design, and R/W acquisition. The budget for this project is limited, as it is a secondary highway; however, the goal is to reconstruct as much of the roadway as possible. There have been a few safety projects that reconstructed small segments within the project limits. These locations will not need to be reconstructed. Fall/Winter 2017
Ice Box Canyon Proposed capital improvement project located on MT 35, north of Bigfork, starting at RP 32.1±, and ending at RP 33.2±. The project will include a re-evaluation of the existing Environmental Assessment (EA). The EA is available here. The FONSI is also available here. The preliminary scope of the project includes improvement of the roadway alignment through Ice Box Canyon, drainage improvements, clear zone improvements, widening of shoulders, installing a left-turn lane at Chapmen Hill Road, accommodation for bicyclists, and improved access management. The project will include 12' driving lanes, and 5' shoulders. There is also a potential shared use path included in the project. The consultant will be required to provide comprehensive design services necessary for the project, including (but not limited to) roadway design, geotechnical investigation, analysis and design, public involvement, hydraulics, R/W design, and R/W acquisition. Utility relocation will also likely be necessary with the project. Some survey has been completed, but additional survey will be necessary. Winter 2017
Salmon Lake Proposed rehabilitation or reconstruction project located on Highway 83 from RP 4.83 to RP 8.99. The proposed scope of work from the 2011 Revised SOW Report was to pulverize and widen the roadway to a 30’ top. However, ti is likely that the scope of the project and the width of the roadway will need to be evaluated. There is limited space available along the corridor, and the design should minimize impacts to structures on private property. A subsurface investigation was completed for the project in January of 2013, and a report prepared with information and recommendations. The consultant will be required to provide comprehensive design services necessary for the project, including (but not limited to) roadway design, geotechnical investigation, analysis and design (including potential soil nail walls), survey, public involvement, hydraulics, R/W design, and R/W acquisition. A categorical exclusion was completed in 2010 for this project; this document will need to be reviewed, and wildlife accommodations will also need to be a consideration. Winter 2017
Quartz Flats Rest Area Phase 1 analysis to evaluate options (do nothing, rehabilitation, reconstruction, etc.) at the Quartz Flats Rest Area. Presently, the Quartz Flats facility is functional, but will need upgrades to remain viable over time. Similar to other I-90 Rest Areas, the site sees quite a bit of use and is experiencing some capacity issues (truck parking, wastewater, etc.). The end result of the Phase 1 analysis will be a report that analyzes improvement options necessary to address site deficiencies, and summarizes the current and future costs (including maintenance) associated with the improvement options.
